ECHOS

To me, these shapes are visual poems. They wind their way through the margins of the page, regularly irregular, their back and forth cadence meant to be read.

The effect of a single action creating a rippled, echoing expression. Positive and negative, 2d and 3d.

These works each began as a single cut.
From a single cut shape emerges three distinct works. I began each work in this series by making a single cut shape from a black page. Each shape constrained to the same margins and location on the page.
Each cut piece becomes its own work. The positive and negative version each become their own collage. Set on light pages. The empty shape where cut-outs were removed becomes a window. The piece is then “extruded” into 3D form as a lasercut, dimensional box - exactly the same dimensions as the preceding work. The box also becomes a window, but the image placed inside is obscured by smoked glass, acting alternately as a black mirror and an image portal, inviting the viewer to peer inside.
